Formed at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR, 2015), Ouissem Moalla (born in 1990 in Stockholm) explores themes of space and memory in his work, drawing inspiration from the research of historian Frances A. Yates. He draws from popular and literary culture, myths, and major texts, with language as a recurring thread. This takes shape through performances, installations, and paintings in which he questions space, our relationship to places, cosmogony, and beliefs.

Whether in Mulhouse, where his studio is located, or during residencies (Motoco&co Tokyo 2018; CEEAC - Basis E.v. Frankfurt 2023; Villa Salammbô Institut français Tunisia 2024), he works with the remnants of industrial ruins (G.O.L.D, 2017), explores myths and representations of urban gateways (Impressions d’Espaces, 2024), wanders around a Shinto shrine carrying chairs strapped to his back to form the character 目 (mù / eye) (Monkey, 2018), or reinterprets mystical texts by intertwining language and the body (Clavis Tabula, 2023). His work, enriched by multicultural influences, flirts with the human and social sciences, questioning archives and communities.

Ouissem Moalla classifies his works into «series», each forming a universe that he continuously expands with new projects exploring the same themes.

A Jewish legend tells about a rabbi giving life to a clay golem in order to defend his community. For this, he wrote the word  "אמת" (phonetically EMET which means "truth") on its fronthead. The golem surpassing his creator and destroying what he had to protect, it had to be stopped. For this, it was necessary to erase the first letter "א" (aleph) because "מת"  (phonetically MET) translates as "death". The Golem became what was used to create it : clay.

 

Une légende hébraïque conte l’histoire d’un rabbin donnant vie à un golem en terre glaise, afin de défendre sa communauté. Pour cela, il lui inscrivit le mot אמת"" (phonétiquement EMET qui se traduit par "vérité") sur le front. Le golem surpassant son créateur et détruisant ce qu’il devait protéger, dût être stoppé.

Pour cela, il fallut effacer la première lettre "א"(aleph) car ""מת (phonétiquement MET) se traduit par "mort". Le Golem redevint ce qui avait servi à sa création : de la terre glaise.

« ADN » est une installation qui s’inspire de l’histoire Hébraïque du Golem. Le spectateur se place devant le miroir sur l'indice rouge, alors le mot "אמת", calligraphié sur le miroir, vient se superposé sur son front. C’est l’image d’une machine à donner la vie.

"DNA" is an installation inspired by the Hebrew story of the Golem. The viewer stands in front of the mirror on the red index, then the word "אמת" handwritten on the mirror is superimposed on her forehead. It is the image of a machine to give life.

 The title "DNA" is a visual association with the written form of the Hebrew word, and the label on the bottom, a sound association. 

Le titre «ADN» est une association visuelle à la graphie du mot hébreu et l’étiquette en bas, une association sonore.
